Polish actor-turned-politician Bronisław Cieślak laid to rest

Scores of mourners have bid a final farewell to Polish actor-turned-politician Bronisław Cieślak, who died earlier this month at the age of 77.

During funeral ceremonies in the southern city of Kraków on Monday, the former parliamentarian was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order following a decision by President Andrzej Duda.

Presidential aide Andrzej Dera presented the honour as family, friends and fans were paying their last respects.

As an actor, Cieślak was best known for his iconic role as Lt. Sławomir Borewicz in the popular Polish 1970s and 1980s TV series 07 zgłoś się (Come in, 07).

He was a politician with the postcommunist Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party and a member of Polish parliament from 1997 to 2005.

In 2005, Cieślak was presented with the Gloria Artis Medal of Cultural Merit in recognition of his contribution to Polish culture.

He died on May 2 after losing a long battle with cancer.
