A total of 37 young directors are in the finals of the 48th Student Academy Awards in various categories.

First Last Summer is set in a world destroyed by an environmental disaster. The film is described by its producers in their publicity material as a blend of “post-apocalyptic cinema convention with a dramatic pro-environmental appeal as well as a treatise on remonstration, the family, an obligation and the process of growing up to independent decisions.”

Gonera, 31, is a fresh graduate of the National Film, Television and Theatre School in the central Polish city of Łódź. She has written and directed several short films.

First Last Summer won a prize at this year’s International Film Festival in Kraków, southern Poland.

Following the announcement by the Student Oscar selection panel, Gonera wrote on social media: “Great joy and emotion. It’s near. Cross your fingers.”
