The focal point of the display is Caravaggio’s work Boy Bitten by a Lizard.

Dating from the end of the 16th century, it is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the artist’s early period.

It is notable for its highly naturalistic treatment of detail and astonishing handling of light that convincingly capture the moment when, bitten by a lizard, the frightened youth suddenly withdraws his arm.

The exhibition includes over 40 paintings by Caravaggio's followers and artists who throughout the 17th century remained under the influence of his original style.

These included Domenico Fetti, Carlo Saraceni, Giovanni Battista, Mattia Preti and Filippo di Liagno.

All the works come from the collection of Roberto Longhi, an Italian art historian and curator who died in 1970.

The exhibition runs until February 10.
