The decision, announced by the Polish Biathlon Association on Wednesday, follows what some have described as yet another uninspiring season for Polish biathletes.

But Kołodziejczyk, 56, defended his record as coach, saying the 2019/2020 season was one of the best for Poland in men’s biathlon in years.

"I quit because I decided my job was done," he said, as quoted by Poland’s PAP news agency.

For the first time in a decade and a half, three members of the Polish men’s national biathlon team last season earned World Cup points, and Poland advanced from 23rd to 17th place in the overall team standings, the PAP news agency reported.

“We managed to improve our position in the Nations Cup by six notches,” Kołodziejczyk said.

“Maybe this is still not enough for fans, but I am satisfied with the work we were able to do," he added.

No replacement has yet been named for Kołodziejczyk, who became coach of the Polish men’s national biathlon team in August 2018.

Prior to that, from 2011 to 2017, Kołodziejczyk worked as coach of the Polish women’s biathlon team, leading it to some of its finest moments ever.

Under him, Polish women biathletes won four world championship medals, six European championships medals, and claimed more World Cup podiums than ever before.

German Michael Greis last year took over as head coach of Poland’s women’s biathlon team to replace Ukrainian Nadiya Bilova.

The next biathlon World Cup season is scheduled to begin in Kontiolahti, Finland in late November.
