Focus Online said that Poland “senses its chance to rise to the top league of European economies.”
It cited political scientist Ernst Hillebrand, head of the Warsaw section of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, as saying there were three reasons for Poland’s resilience amid the virus crisis.
The first is the country’s broad-based economy, with no sector accounting for more than 15 percent of the share in foreign trade, Hillebrand was cited as saying.
The Polish government has ensured that the economy is not over-dependent on exports, Focus Online added.
Another factor is the early response to the COVID-19 crisis by Poland's conservative Law and Justice government, which has delivered a multi-billion aid and stimulus package to protect the economy.
This prevented a major loss of jobs, Hillebrand was cited as saying.
"The fact that the (Polish) government has been taking domestic demand seriously for a long time now makes the Polish economy less vulnerable” amid a global crisis, Hillebrand added, as quoted by Focus Online.
The Polish government in March came up with a multi-billion relief and stimulus package to mitigate the economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In its spring economic forecast, released in May, the European Commission said it expected Poland's GDP to shrink by 4.3 percent this year, less than in any other EU country.
A total of 25,177 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 1,127 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Friday morning.
