A number of emergencies were reported after strong winds uprooted trees and disrupted power supplies in some regions of the country, especially its southwestern Lower Silesia region.

Firefighters were called to help pump water out of flooded basements and remove fallen trees from roads, Krzysztof Batorski, a spokesman for the State Fire Service, told public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency on Tuesday morning.

The Government Centre for Security (RCB) has sent out text messages alerting people in several provinces over intense rainfall and possible storms causing a risk of local flooding and power outages.

Officials have advised people to stay away from open spaces and never shelter under a tree during a storm.

A line of storms was expected to roll across the nation on Tuesday and later this week amid a stretch of scorching weather.
