Poland’s President Andrzej Duda is set to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron in Berlin on Tuesday to discuss ways to defuse the West's standoff with Russia over Ukraine, according to officials.

The talks between the three leaders come after Duda on Monday discussed the Ukraine crisis with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, and said afterwards that the alliance’s eastern flank needed to be strengthened amid intensifying tensions with Russia.

While in Brussels on Monday, the Polish president also spoke about Ukraine and threats to regional security with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel.

After those meetings in the Belgian capital, Duda told reporters: “What we need today is European unity, both in the EU and NATO.”

In recent days, planes carrying US troops and army equipment have landed in Poland as part of efforts to bolster NATO's eastern flank and reinforce allies in Eastern Europe amid a Russian military buildup near Ukraine.

Russia has amassed more than 100,000 troops around Ukraine in recent weeks, according to media reports, raising fears in the West that Moscow may be preparing for a new invasion of the country.

Moscow has denied plans for an assault but says it could take unspecified military action if its security demands are not met, the Reuters news agency has reported.

Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and then fomented a separatist conflict in that country's eastern Donbas region, leading to a wave of EU and US sanctions against Moscow and Russian officials.

Poland, Germany and France together form what is known as the Weimar Triangle, a group they set up in the early 1990s.
