The woman was attacked in Ukraine's southern Kherson region after a Russian sympathiser told the troops her husband was a Ukrainian soldier on the front line, Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reported on Friday.

It quoted the woman as saying that she did not "want to live" after what happened.

She also vowed to find those who betrayed her, the paper reported on its website.

Alina Kryvoulyak, of La Strada, a women's rights group, has said "there could be thousands of women and young girls who have been raped" by Russian troops in Ukraine, according to the dailymail.co.uk website.

Ukraine's Prosecutor-General Iryna Venediktova was quoted as saying this week that Russian soldiers "have committed sexual violence against Ukrainian women and men, against children and against the elderly."

A Polish website reported last month that a Ukrainian woman has died after being repeatedly violated by Russian soldiers in front of her six-year-old child.

The ordeal happened in Ukraine’s embattled southern city of Mariupol, the niezalezna.pl website reported at the time.

Ukraine’s defence ministry announced the news of the woman’s death on Twitter, adding that her son’s hair had turned grey following the horrific scenes, according to niezalezna.pl.

Britain's ambassador to Ukraine, Melinda Simmons, said in a tweet earlier this month that rape "is a weapon of war" and a "war crime."

Simmons tweeted: "Though we don’t yet know the full extent of its use in Ukraine it’s already clear it was part of the Russian arsenal. Women raped in front of their kids, girls in front of their families, as a deliberate act of subjugation. Rape is a war crime."
