The initiative is part of the Canada Ukraine Surgical Aid Programme (CUSAP), Polish state news agency PAP has reported.

Based at the Czeladź hospital, 30 volunteer nurses, anesthesiologists and surgeon specialists from Canada are treating Ukrainian soldiers as well as civilians who have become casualties of the war.

The Canadian team is supported by Polish and Ukrainian medical professionals from the Czeladź facility, including Ukrainian doctors who speak Polish and English, the PAP news agency reported.

Delivering surgical care to war casualties

The Czeladź hospital currently houses the first group of 18 patients from Ukraine, who are being treated for post-traumatic defects and deformities.

Professor Oleh Antonyshyn from the University of Toronto, who leads the Canadian medical team, told PAP that the patients had “horrible injuries” from Russian gun fire or bomb explosions.

“We are striving to ensure that their future lives can be as close to normal as possible, but their injuries are very serious,” he added.

‘Wonderful hospital’

Orest Sklierenko, the head of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, which runs the programme, said the organisation was “very grateful to our Polish partners” for sharing their facilities. He described the Czeladź centre as “a wonderful hospital.”

Meanwhile, Dariusz Jorg from the Czeladź hospital stressed that the overriding aim of the project was “to help war casualties from Ukraine.”

He added that the programme also allowed Polish doctors to exchange experiences with outstanding surgeons, anesthesiologists and orthopaedists from Canada, “and so raise the quality of medical care provided by our hospital.”

The Polish-Canadian-Ukrainian programme of surgical care for war casualties from Ukraine is planned for a period of two years, the PAP news agency reported.

Thursday is day 204 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
