Fierce battles are ongoing in the eastern city of Bakhmut between Ukrainian and Russian armed forces, with pro-Kyiv forces managing to hold their ground despite claims of Russian advances, according to Ukraine's military.

Russia "continues to focus its main efforts on conducting offensive actions in the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Maryinka areas," according to an operational update of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"Bakhmut and Maryinka remain at the epicenter of hostilities," it added.

Over the past day, Ukrainian troops repelled more than 60 Russian attacks on the indicated sections of the front, the update says.
