"On the night of May 21 to 22, the enemy attacked Ukraine with 24 Shahed-131/136 strike drones launched from Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Kursk in Russia and temporarily occupied Crimea," the Ukrainian air force said on Wednesday morning.

"As a result of anti-aircraft combat, the Ukrainian Defense Forces managed to shoot down all 24 Shaheds," it added, as cited by state news agency Ukrinform.

Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said on the Telegram messaging app that the drones were destroyed over the Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Sumy and Odesa regions in the country's south and east.

According to a report by the Reuters news agency, Russian drones struck energy sites in Ukraine early on Wednesday and knocked out power to some parts of the country's northern Sumy region.

The Sumy regional authority said the drones hit the cities of Shostka and Konotop, northeast of Kyiv and near the Russian border, Reuters reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Wednesday is day 819 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
