“NATO should send a strong signal that the Northern Alliance, our partners, do care about an independent, sovereign and democratic Belarus. Such an call and proposal was contained in a recent joint letter to the NATO secretary and the members of the Alliance, addressed by the presidents of Poland, Latvia and Lithuania before the NATO summit”, Pavel Latushka, a Belarusian oppositionist, told Polish Radio website.

“The NATO summit in Vilnius should address the situation in Belarus in connection with the challenges related to the fact that Alexander Lukashenka supports aggression in Ukraine”, told us Pavel Latushka, deputy prime minister in The United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

He noted that Lukashenka's regime is co-responsible for the act of aggression against Ukraine. Lukashenka's regime has made Belarusian territory available to the Russian army, and the regime trains soldiers, provides ammunition, produces weapons for the Russian Federation, he said.

Pavel Latushka added that recent information about mercenaries from the Wagner Group being sent to Belarus is another challenge for the security of NATO countries.

“NATO should send a strong signal that the Alliance, our partners, cares about an independent, sovereign and democratic Belarus. This was included in the letter to the NATO secretary and the members of the North Atlantic Alliance, which was presented before the summit by the presidents of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia”, stressed Pavel Latushka. "This is an important signal that our neighbors understand the importance of an independent and free Belarus. And a proactive strategy for change in Belarus should be developed”, he added.

Letter by three presidents on the aspirations of the Belarusian nation and threats from Belarus

The presidents of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia: Andrzej Duda, Gitanas Nauseda and Egils Levits, a few days ago - on Friday, July 8 - announced a letter to the NATO Secretary General and the members of the Alliance.

The presidents wrote on the aspirations of the Belarusian people and their importance.

As they wrote, on the eve of the NATO summit in Vilnius, “we need solidarity and unity to counter all threats in line with the 360–degree principle. Including those brought about by recent developments in Belarus. We must show Russia that we see and understand them and that we are ready to use all possible means to counter them. The Belarussian nation needs our reassurance, namely they need to know that a democratic, stable and prosperous Belarus is important to us. And that it will not be possible with Belarus being subdued by Russia and exploited by the Kremlin’s infighting. Therefore, the actions that we propose will not only improve Allied security, but will also correspond with the democratic aspirations of the Belarussian nation”.

Ukraine on its path to NATO

When asked about Ukraine's prospects in NATO, Pavel Latushka said that Ukraine already largely meets the standards related to membership in the Alliance. He told that Ukraine fights for a free and secure Europe, Ukraine has taken on this responsibility and already shows that she deserves to be a member of the Alliance and to have NATO support, he stressed.

"NATO's support for Ukraine is crucial, it is about ensuring Ukraine's victory as soon as possible", and this is what all Belarusians and other European countries find the most important now, stressed Latushka.
