Michał Dworczyk, the prime minister's top aide, added that the government was not ruling out obtaining shots “through other channels than the current ones."

But he said Poland was not planning to buy Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine.

Speaking on public broadcaster Polish Radio on Thursday, Dworczyk noted that last year his country decided to join an EU mechanism for obtaining vaccines.

EU mechanism 'not the most perfect solution'

"Today we see that this is not the most perfect solution," said Dworczyk, referring to delays in vaccine deliveries.

The European Union, of which Poland is part, has struck deals to secure vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZenecaModernaCureVacSanofi-GSK, and Johnson & Johnson.

As of Thursday, over 1.1 million first-dose shots had been administered in Poland, while more than 340,000 people had received a second shot, according to the health ministry.

Poland on Thursday reported 6,496 new coronavirus infections and 444 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases during the pandemic to 1,533,511 and fatalities to 38,344.

Dworczyk said earlier this week that Poland had ordered almost 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in total, enough to inoculate 58 million people, more than its population of around 38 million.
