Stubb, a centre-right pro-European politician, narrowly won Finland's presidential election on Sunday, defeating liberal Pekka Haavisto, news agencies reported.

Stubb is a strong supporter of Ukraine who has taken a tough stance towards Russia, the Reuters news agency reported.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said in a post on the X social media platform: "My sincere congratulations to Alexander Stubb on your victory in the presidential elections."

Duda added: "Finland is our close partner and ally in the EU and NATO. I look forward to working with you on deepening our relations."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Stubb in an X message.

Sincere congratulations to Alexander Stubb on his election as President of Finland," Zelensky said. "I appreciate his firm support for Ukraine. Ukraine and Finland, in solidarity with other partners, are strengthening the security of entire Europe and each nation on our continent. I look forward to advancing our relations and our shared vision of a free, united, and well-defended Europe."

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II.

Monday is day 719 of Russias war on Ukraine.
