Trump had been expected to visit Denmark after his scheduled trip to Poland from August 31 to September 2.

It’s unclear whether the cancellation of the Denmark trip will affect Trump’s scheduled visit to Poland, during which the US presidential couple are set to attend commemorative ceremonies in Warsaw to mark the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II, CNN reported on Wednesday.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday: “Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.”

“The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future,” he added in a second post on Twitter that day.

Denmark’s Frederiksen on Sunday called Trump’s idea of buying Greenland absurd after an economic adviser to the US president confirmed his interest in buying the island, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously,” Frederiksen told Sermitsiaq, a Greenlandic weekly during a visit to the island.

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory and the world’s largest island, is home to 56,000 people.
