Kamil Bortniczuk said that some 40 sports ministers from around the world have struck a common position on Russia’s assault on Ukraine, the state PAP news agency reported.

He added the move had been suggested by Poland, Great Britain and Canada.

The officials are calling for Russia and Belarus to be excluded from organising international sports events; for Russian and Belarusian athletes to be banned from competing abroad; and for a reduction of financial links with Russian and Belarusian state-backed sponsors.

Signatories include the sports ministers from the member states of the European Union, Great Britain, Canada, the United States and Japan, among other countries, PAP reported.

The move is designed to prevent Moscow from using sports events for the purposes of propaganda, Bortniczuk told the news agency.

Thursday is day fifteen of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24.
