Poland's 'Leave No Traces' fails to make Oscars shortlist

Polish director Jan P. Matuszyński’s drama “Leave No Traces” has failed to make the shortlist of 15 movies eligible for Oscar nominations in the foreign-language film category.

The film, which tells the story of a young man who witnesses the fatal beating of his friend by the communist police in 1980s Warsawwas in September picked as Poland’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday unveiled its shortlists for the 2022 Oscars in 10 categories, including international features.

Fifteen international features made the cut, out of the films from 92 countries that were eligible, news outlets reported.

Frontrunners in the Best International Feature Film category include Iran’s A Hero, Italy’s Hand of God, Japan’s Drive My Car and Flee, which represents Denmark, according to the hollywoodreporter.com website.

Poland’s Leave No Traces, which had its world premiere at the International Film Festival in Venice on September 9, failed to make the shortlist.

The film, co-produced by France and the Czech Republic, is set to hit cinemas in the United States in February. It entered cinemas in Poland in late September

Leave No Traces is based on real-life events surrounding Grzegorz Przemyk, a Warsaw high school student who was beaten to death by communist police in May 1983, during martial law imposed by the authorities to crush the Solidarity freedom movement.

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hand out the Oscar awards on March 27.
