A company called Stellarium is already mining these deposits, hailed as "the new amber route,” the Puls Biznesu newspaper reported. Another firm, White Amber, plans to follow suit by the middle of the year.
More businesses are lining up to jump on the bandwagon as the region is believed to offer tons of the gemstone hidden underground.
When Poles think of amber, they usually picture the Baltic Sea. Meanwhile, much bigger deposits have now been found several hundred kilometers from the seaside, Puls Biznesu reported.
It quoted data from Poland’s National Geological Institute, which in 2019 estimated that amber deposits in the Lubartów area of the Lublin region may be up to 25 times larger than those in the northern Pomerania region, 1,500 tons vs. 59 tons, according to Puls Biznesu.
This makes the Lublin region highly attractive to amber explorers, including big mining companies, the paper reported.
The region’s amber deposits are available not as deep as in the north of the country, making mining more economically viable, the paper said.
“I am convinced there will be an amber El Dorado here because what is happening now is only the beginning of a large-scale mining project,” Henryk Ciosmak, CEO of Stellarium, told Puls Biznesu, referring to the mythical city of gold in South America.
