After its Polish premiere in March this year, The Hater was named best feature in the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival’s International Narrative Competition section. Then, Deadline reported, Netflix bought international rights to the film and premiered it on July 29th.
The film tells the story of an ex-law-student named Tomek who takes a job at a shady public-relations company where he excels at dirty political games that he is asked to orchestrate on social media.
In a review, The New York Times called The Hater “most effective in detailing how disinformation campaigns work,” while Deadline hailed it as a “timely, elevated thriller that deals with class, politics, social media, disinformation, identity and the pursuit of happiness at all costs.”
Jan Komasa’s previous movie, Corpus Christi, won an Oscar nomination in the Best International Feature Film category and also garnered 11 awards from the Polish Film Academy.
